45 Years

LAG is turning 45 this year!

When LAG turned 40 in 2012 the celebrations were tinged with a sense of trepidation. The Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act had been granted royal assent and was due to come into force in April 2013, and we knew what that would mean for access to justice, not just in terms of those who would find themselves unable to access legal representation and advice but also for the firms and not-for-profits that would struggle to keep going.

As a largely self-funding charity, LAG relies on the income generated from the sales of our books, bookings on our training courses and conferences, and advertising revenue and subscription fees from both Legal Action magazine and Community Care Law Reports. The cuts in legal aid have hurt us financially but as the access to justice gap widens, our campaigning, resources and legal education work are needed now more than ever.

Over the past five years we have reacted by publishing all new books simultaneously as ebooks; by making our Housing Law Casebook available online as a searchable, continuously updated online publication; and by launching our current website, which has allowed us to provide an online version of Legal Action. The continuing dedication of our authors and trainers, and the support of our loyal customers mean we are able to celebrate our 45th anniversary with a fair amount of optimism.

We are working on a new, mobile-friendly-website that will greatly improve access and the user experience for customers and subscribers. Legal Action articles and features will publish on a continuous cycle and subscribers will be able to purchase multi-user licences and have the option to purchase individual issues. The new site will enable us to sell ebooks direct as well as bundled packages of print and books . And Community Care Law Reports, after years of pleading from our subscribers, will also be available online. We have big plans for the future! But all this takes investment. As such, we have launched our 45th Anniversary Appeal to raise funds to help us reach our goals.
